  John Iskyan

Date of Birth: April 11, 1960
Department: Liquidity Products Group
Position: First Vice President

John was the most loyal and dedicated man I know. Personally, John and I had just celebrated our sixteenth wedding anniversary. We were married on our college campus, Saint Michael’s College, in Winooshi, Vermont in September of 1985. John and I met the first week of my freshman year and started dating on Valentine’s Day of 1980. He was the love of my life and I his. There is no doubt in my mind that our children, Peter, 12, and Carolyn, 10, and I were the most important things in his life.
Professionally, John joined Cantor two weeks after graduating from college in 1982 and remained there for nineteen years. A rarity on Wall Street!
His loyalty and dedication was apparent in his lifelong friendships as well. Many friends made a point of telling me how true a friend John had been over the years during good times as well as bad. As quoted by Mike Anderson in his eulogy, “John was a devoted person with a strong sense of responsibility and as having held strongly to his convictions and morals when it wasn’t always easy to do so.”
John was an avid outdoorsman, a passion he shared with family and friends. He enjoyed hiking, camping, boating and most importantly skiing. He never let a day go by without rejoicing in the beauty of the world around him.

  • Isk had alot of stories to tell about going to college in Vt., which easliy made me jealous, because I love the mtns. His favorite stories though, were his recent trips to New Hampshire, Maine and Stowe, VT, with his wife and kids. His stories of his camping trips with his son made you truly know how much his kids meant to him and how much he valued that time. There were many nights whem Teddy, Matty and myself tried to talk him into going out for beers and dinner, but he would tell us he had to coach his son’s lacrosse team. Although we would have a great night planned, he knew he would enjoy it more sharing it with his son. He really took joy in being the best father he could.

  • I worked with John at CF and loved the stories he told my husband and I about his wife and kids and his love of the outdoors. I will be running the NYC narathon this week, dedicating it to all the friends of my husband and I, who have died. Mile 9 is a favorite for us. It goes through Bed-Stuy, and while you pass through this part, thousands of kids flank the streets and hold up their hands to give you high-fives. I am dedicating this mile to Isk and will wear a flag with his name on it. He always thought of his kids first and loved being outdoors with them.

  • Isk would always visit our desk each day to say hi to Tow and I. He always knew how to make us smile. My prayers are for the Iskyan family.

  • I worked with John in the “pit” of the bond room for about 8 years. I remember John proudly telling stories about his children and excitedly planning his yearly ski trips, his advice and helpfulness to guide a “novice” thru a trade and just the day to day small talk. I never realized, until this tragedy, the major impact my former co-workers had on me or how important and instrumental we were to each other in our process of growing-up and working at Cantor. God bless you John for being the wonderful, admirable family man. You set the tone for what we all wanted in our lifes. Miss you and you are forever in my prayers.

  • John was a lifelong friend who helped shape my life and make me a better person. No adversity could diminish John’s inner strength, and that came through as leadership and love to all those close to him. I will never forget my memories of John, some going back to the sixties, nor will anyone else he touched in his life. Rest assured my friend that you have left your legacy and a beautiful family for the world to cherish. God bless.

  • John was my best friend growing up. We, and our families, did everything together…. skiing, Giant’s games, vacations, summer camp, golfing, you name it. As a couple of 17 year olds, we hiked and camped out on Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range for a couple of weeks. My earliest memory of Isk is how excited I was awaiting his family’s arrival for a vacation on Lake George – we were about 5, yet already good friends. We even hiked Elephant Mt. with our Dads and brothers….. that may have been the start of his love of the mountains. God Bless Isk.

  • John, it was always a pleasure to share with you some books I read or music from my church. You always were interested to critique the material with me afterwards. I am honored to have known you. You always carried yourself in such a wonderful professional manner. My condolences go out to John’s wife and family. He was an awesome gentleman. G-D Bless.

    David Bellows, Co-worker and friend
  • It was my great pleasure to sit next to John in the 10 year room for over 2 years. John was an honest and fair man who always did his best to make everyone around him feel comfortable. During football season, “Isky” and I would talk Giants any chance we could get. John was the kind of person that made you see the good in the world, family, friends, values, and beliefs. I think of him often and it always makes me smile. May God bless his family, and comfort them the rest of their lives.

  • Isky, you were the kind of family man everyone respected for your sincerity and decency. The best conversations we ever had were about your brother Peter, who was my teammate on that unstoppable Houston Oiler squad in PBC Football. I remember Peter as a gentle giant, and I’ll remember you as a man who was unwavering in his dedication to his family. I know the Iskyans who have left us are truly in Sports Heaven. God Bless Your Family.

  • My Dear Brother,
Words can not express how much I miss you, especially today, six months since we lost you. You are one of the most influential people in my life, and I have always admired you for your devotion, dedication and absolute love for your family and freinds. You are truely one of the best people I know. Your love for life and your warm laughter were so infectious, something I miss dearly. I could write volumes on how you impacted my life but I will sum it up by saying that you were always my hero and now you are my angel. I love you brother.

  • John was a tremendous person, he had all the traits, he was solid, smart, respectful, good-natured and loyal. On a vacation with John and his family last summer I told him that I admired the parents that He and Margaret were and their great relationship with their children (on a personal note I am so glad I told him that). I can see John in Margaret, Peter and Carolyn and I know he is with them and the rest of us. He has certainly helped me “walk on” and I know he is doing the same for all of his Family and devoted Friends. We miss you John. Tom 6/7/02

  • I grew up with you and your younger brother, Peter, who was my best friend when we were in elementary school in Manhasset. You had a great set of siblings & your parents were friends with my parents. We lost Peter in Junior High and then you six years ago.

I got to see you and meet your wife, son and daughter at your Mother’s house on Revere Road in the mid-1990s. It was great to see you and was pleased to see that you’d named your son Peter in honor of your brother. You are missed.

  • I can’t believe how time passes.. More than six years later. My life has changed much since 9/11. Perhaps, partially as a result of that dark day. But, I know that John has helped me through these changes. He continues to be a great friend even now. I, for one, am not suprised at all.
