  Michael Miller

Date of Birth: November 30, 1961
Department: Options
Position: Bond Trader/Partner

We have not written about our son, Michael M. Miller, sooner because it is so difficult to accept the fact that he died.
Michael was a joy from the time he was born. He was always so full of life, energy, and mischief too, and as he grew older, all that energy was channeled into sports. He brought so much love and laughter into everyone’s lives. He could be serious too about important matters and always had a positive attitude about life. When a coach from the University of Pennsylvania came to see him in high school, his mind was set, and he was going to that school. And, so he did, they recruited him as a wide receiver. Those years were some of our happiest as well as Michael’s. He made our lives so exciting just being around him. When he graduated from Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, he went to work and live in Manhattan. He fell in love with the city, but always came home to Milford, CT., to visit family and friends. During his visits, he would tell us about the various people he had met and places of interest he enjoyed. We could visit all these places through his tales of adventure. He was generous with his time and money, not only with his family, but everyone else in his life.
The light in our lives has gone out, but Michael will live forever in our minds and hearts.

With love,
Mom and Dad

  • It’s hard to understand, to think something like this could happen to someone I know, especially to someone like Mike. Being the great athlete that he was, I still tell the story of how I beat Mike Miller in the 300 yard dash in our 5th grade track mMeet at Live Oaks School.

  • Miller was a different man. He was charming, he was tough, he was very funny, he was loving, he was aggravating. He was all of these. You could be so mad at him one minute and the next you thought he was the greatest. He lived his life in the present. He never boasted about his past and never went on and on about the future. He lived for now. Whenever I came down to NYC from Toronto, Mike would set me up. I’d suddenly find myself at some glamorous party with Tommy Hilfigger. I didn’t even know Tommy Hilfigger was a person. But there he was right beside me and Miller was gone. He had made sure I was taken care of and than went back to his busy life.

    God Bless Mike Miller.

  • I KNOW MANY PEOPLE LOST SOMEONE ON SEPTEMBER 11, BUT I DON’T THINK ANYONE LOST SOMEONE AS SPECIAL AS MICHAEL MILLER. A LOT OF MILFORD CITIZENS KNEW HIM, BUT NOT LIKE I DID. MICHAEL WAS A SPECIAL PERSON IN MY LIFE. WHEN I WAS 3, MIKEY, AS I CALLED HIM STARTED A TRADITION. EVERY YEAR, HIS CHRISTMAS PRESENT TO MY MOM AND I WAS TAKING US TO SEE THE CHRISTMAS SHOW AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL. IT WAS SOMETHING I LOOKED FORWARD TO ALMOST BETTER THAN CHRISTMAS ITSELF. IT WAS’NT THE SHOW THAT I LOVED SO MUCH IT WAS MICHAEL. HE HAD THE BIGGEST HEART OF ANYONE I KNEW. HE HAD THE GREATEST PERSONALITY AND HE WAS SO LIKABLE. HE WOULD BRING US TO ROCKEFELLER CENTER, GO INTO A CHOCOLATE SHOP, AND BUY A TINY BOX OF “MAGIC CHOCOLATES”. THEN HE SAID WHEN I ATE ONE MAKE A WISH AND HE TURNED ME AROUND AND THE TREE WOULD BE LIT UP. (AND I BELIEVED HIM) IN 1998 HE TOOK ME TO A SURPRISE SHOW. HE TOOK MY MOM AND I TO SEE “THE LION KING” ON BROADWAY! I HAD SEEN THE MOVIE 5 TIMES SO HE KNEW I LOVED IT. MICHAEL MEANT SO MUCH TO ME AND I DID NOT WANT TO BELIEVE THE TRAGIC NEWS. MICHAEL HAD ONE ASPECT THAT I ADMIRED ABOUT HIM. HE WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT LIFE AQND HAPPY TO BE ALIVE. I THINK EVERYONE COULD LEARN SOMETHING FROM THAT. I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW BIG HIS HEART WAS. MICHEAL WAS ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE. I’LL ALWAYS ADMIRE HOW HE CHERISHED LIFE. I LOVED HIM DEARLY AND I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE TIMES WE SHARED.

  • Michael, right from the day you interviewed me, you drove me nuts, you made me frustrated and angry and then you made me laugh! Every Monday I think of you laughing at me and saying, “You might as well take Mondays off because you’re worthless on Mondays!” Of course, I replied, “Well, if you’ll give me Mondays off, I’ll take them!” And I’ll never be able to get out of my head that silly little sound you and Gary Lambert made back and forth–the time we left that as a voicemail at your friend’s place in Vermont. When I spoke to Gary for the first time after the 11th, he made that silly ‘ehe’ sound and I started crying–the sound that once made me laugh, made me cry. And one of the guys with whom I work with now, does the fist to fist “handshake” just like you did when you were excited/pumped about something. When he does it, I want to cry and smile at the same time–a piece of you here with me! And I’ll make it to Spain one of these days simply because you and Patricia had such a wonderful time–and Patricia, thank you for making him happy!

I’d love to see your home in Heaven, as it must be one amazing, over-the-top place!

  • Today, 15 months to the day after the tragedy, I received a call from a Foran High School classmate and learned of the death of my old friend Michael Miller. I’ve been thinking about him all day and now, for me, the events of September 11 have become personal. I will now and forever associate the falling of the towers with my old friend, Michael. Unfortunately we didn’t keep in touch with one another, however, once in while, when reminiscing about High School, I would think about him and all the fun we had on the track team back at Foran. Even though I was three years older than Michael we hung around together at practice as fellow sprinters. We had a real competitive rivalry. My senior year I set four sprinting records and distinctly remember thinking at the time “Mike’s going to break those records, he’s just a sophomore and he can almost run with the me, a senior”. In my year book he wrote with a sarcastic wit: “I hope you realize by now who’s the best runner in this school and remember who blew you away at all the track meets. So when you go to college and try to run I’ll come watch and laugh!” Mike, for the record, I’ve got to say you never did beat me because they are still standing 23 years later! Sounds like Mike did carry on his athleticism as a wide receiver at the University of Pennsylvania. I can only imagine his competitive nature and outgoing personality made him a successful businessman as well. After today, old buddy, glory day rivalries really don’t seem all that important.

  • Michael was a close and dear friend and one of my favorite people to be around; he was like the older brother I never had. I have so many great memories of him, some of them make me laugh out loud! Michael was warm, funny, lovable and generous to a fault. He was so animated and full of life, it is impossible to imagine him not being part of it any longer. On bright sunny days, I often think of him and know he is still with us. I miss him as much as I did five years ago when this tragic event took him from us and wish I had once last chance to give him a big hug.
