  Edward Charles Murphy

Date of Birth: September 25, 1958
Department: Forward Bandwidth Trading and Power Brokerage
Position: Managing Director

Edward Charles Murphy, age 42. A graduate of Pace University, he started his business career as an independent commodities trader. He joined Martin Bierbaum International in 1988 as a broker and rose to Vice President. In 1994 he joined Noonan Astley & Pearce as Vice President and Broker. He established the first electricity trading group at PVM Energy Group in 1996 and was recruited by Cantor Fitzgerald in 1997 as Managing Director to create their Power Brokerage Services Division. At the time of his death he was responsible for establishing and managing its Forward Bandwidth Desk.

Ed was a life-long resident of Clifton, New Jersey. He was the Chairman of the Clifton Traffic Safety Commission and is the former Grand Knight of the Regina Mundi Council of the Knights of Columbus. An avid marathon runner, he competed in the New York City and Boston marathons.

Although Ed was a tough negotiator, he had a heart of gold for family, friends and animals. He volunteered for many charitable causes and was a supporter of the arts. With what little free time he had, he could be found on a golf course anywhere in the country. He loved to travel, particularly to the American Southwest where he researched and collected regional art and “investigated” local golf courses.

Ed is the son of the late Daniel J. Murphy and is survived by his mother, Evelyn Murphy of Clifton, his brothers, Rev. Daniel W. Murphy of Sparta, NJ, and Richard E. Murphy and sister-in-law, Barbara of Boston, and his nephew, Ryan L. Murphy of Hoboken, NJ.

  • Ed….I knew you for many years through work. You always had time to pick up the phone and chat and never too busy for a beer. When I went through a hard time looking for work you went out of your way to try and help me……I’ll never forget that mate.God bless you.

    Dane.

  • Ed Murphy was a dear friend. He covered me as an electricity trader and then became a mentor to me after I joined eSpeed. Always showing me a line of thought I had not contemplated, Ed was an original thinking always looking for new opportunities. He was very aggressive getting business and because of that he was very successful and loved what he did for a living.

But what I am most grateful to Ed for is after I was laid off from eSpeed, it was he who immediately reached out to me and found me interviews, within about a day, with three very promising opportunities. In other words, I wasn’t yesterday’s news to him: he cared enough to take time out of his busy day and, putting his reputation on the line, make phone calls on my behalf and get me interviews.

I will miss you Ed but know that your sharp wit and wonderfully dry sense of humor will be with us forever.

Rodo, Friend, Colleague and former customer
  • Ed was always a breath of fresh air at work because he always had a pleasant word to say and he took the time to explain things to you. Ed and I were involved in a bandwidth project, something I knew nothing about and he took a lot of time to explain things to me so I understood. He will be missed.

    Lee Abbamonte, Former Colleague
  • Ed,

A friend and smart businessman. You will always be remembered. The bandwidth trading business you started will continue in your memory and the many hours you and I spent haggling… Ed was the best at what he did. Thank you Ed…

  • Ed was the very first person I saw in the morning. We had a lot in common so it was very nice to start off the day with a chat. Every morning we would have a cup of herbal tea with lemon together. He was such a warm person, sometimes when I first saw him, I felt like giving him a big hug. I wish I did. I hope he knows how special I always thought he was. I will miss him and every time I have a cup of tea with lemon I always think of Ed. Ed, you will be missed.

  • Eddie “The Murph”! I’m not sure I can truly put into words how much he meant to me. I started at Bierbaum Martin back in July 1992 and Eddie was one of the first people I met. We had worked together for close to 7 of the past 10 years. Since then, he has been a co-worker, a mentor, a best friend. We were that close. If I had a problem, I went to Eddie, not even my own family. If I needed to borrow $1000 because I screwed up something, Eddie gave it to me and said, “Pay me when you can”, and didn’t charge interest either. With Eddie, I always knew I’d find the answer to any problem, even though he wasn’t always right. He even came to all the heavy metal shows with me whether it was KISS or Warrant, he loved it. I miss him every day and always will. I didn’t lose a friend, I lost a big brother. I love you pal, God bless you! I’ll remember you at my next Motley Crue concert.

    Buck LaPointe, Very Close Friend
  • I love you Ed Murphy! You were my partner in Life and Love for 17 1/2 years. You are in my thoughts every day and in my prayers every night.

I miss you with a passion. Who Loves Ya Baby!

  • I interviewed Ed when I was writing up Cantor business units for a planned website. At first, we wrote up a description of how – and why on earth – people trade weather. Then he called to say he had started trading bandwidth. It was a relatively new field and as we worked out ways to describe it, I watched him learning the intricacies as he explained it. Soon he had developed a primer on bandwidth trading basics. Clear, focused explanations of an esoteric new development. And without missing a professional beat, he’d intersperse these technical discussions with fascinating comments about movies and actors. Multi-dimensional even while focusing on complex details!

  • I completed a 5k in memory of Mr Murphy. I never met him but was able to run in memory of him today 20 years later .. I have photos on my Facebook page honoring Mr Murphy.
